A Visit to a Turtle Hatchery
| There is a turtle hatchery at Bentota on the west coast. Eggs are bought from local fishermen who would otherwise sell them in the market. The hatchery pays a slightly higher price. Then the eggs are incubated in the warm sand. When the eggs hatch the baby turtles are put into tanks and later released at night into the sea when they are about a week old. Here Rosemary holds a three day old baby Leatherback and a baby Loggerhead (we think). | A three month old Loggerhead turtle (we think). The Sanctuary keeps a few specimens. |

| More pictures. | An albino - kept in the hatchery because it would be too easily preyed upon in the wild. Also very pretty! |
