A Visit to Trincomalee - in the war zone - April 2007.  Please see the June 2007 newsletter for a detailed description of this trip.

A view across the famous harbour showing the flour terminal which is mentioned in our June newsletter. One of many Hindu temples in Trincomalee.  But there are also many Buddhist temples and mosques.  The population is said to be almost equally divided between Tamils, Sinhalese and Muslims.
This particular Buddha was erected in rather a provocative position in a predominantly Tamil/Hindu part of town.  The result was rioting, closed streets and much razor wire Rosemary takes Henosha for her first paddle in the Indian Ocean together with Henosha's grandmother, Jennifer.  But the beach area was empty compared to the crowds that used to come in the peace (between Feb 2002 and early 2006).
Across the harbour is the own of Mutur.  Here the Methodist Church is the home to 58 internally displaced persons (IDPs) who live in wooden shacks with palm leaf roofs.  The picture shows the construction of a tin roof supplied by one of the many NGOs.  This will reflect sufficient heat to make a real difference to the comfort inside. Mutur has many house damaged by war.  Here is one close to the Catholic Church. There even more homeless refugees are sheltering.
