A ride on the Kandy / Colombo Express

On the March Poya Day (a Buddhist holy day and a public holiday in Sri Lanka) we went on a day trip to Colombo on the Kandy / Colombo Express.  The railway line was built in the 19th century to bring tea from the estates to Colombo port.  The route is famously beautiful.  Here is a distant view of Bible rock at dawn. The train is a diesel pulling five or six coaches.  On the way down in the morning we had tickets in the special observation car in the morning, and second class, numbered tickets for the return journey. This photo is taken on the return journey. There were fans in the observation car.  The train was on time on both occasions.  There are other spectacular railway journeys in Sri Lanka too - which we hope to make in due course.

The journey takes under three hours and is quicker and much more relaxing than the car journey with which we are becoming familiar.  That journey can easily take four or more hours depending especially on the traffic in Colombo.
