A visit to Pettah

| Pettah and the adjacent neighbourhood, Fort, form the old heart of the city of Colombo. Pettah is a vibrant multi-cultural market-place full of shops. We visited on a Poya Day so things were relatively quiet - but fishermen were still landing their catches and the fish market was very busy. |
Amongst the shops we spotted this attractive mosque. |

We were shown round one of these two Hindu temples - something we had previously thought was not encouraged. Ritual washing of an entire temple is not unknown. In fact, the President of Sri Lanka himself got into a bit of a scrape in South India last year when his Roman Catholic wife's visit to a temple led to seven days of ritual washing. Interestingly, the guide who invited us into the above temple also turned out to be a Roman Catholic. But no-one in Pettah seemed to mind. |
This is Wolvendaal Church, is said to be the most important Dutch building in Sri Lanka. Dating from 1749 it has some beautiful furniture and grand tombstones on the floor. The Dutch Reformed Church is a small denomination in Sri Lanka these days but services in all three languages do take place in this Church on a Sunday. It was lovely and cool when we visited. We had it to ourselves. NB The red pillar box outside! |
