MISSION PARTNER NEWSLETTER FROM SRI LANKA: APRIL/MAY 2009
GOODBYES TO ………

The fourth years….
We have felt a particular affinity with this group as we arrived at TCL just after they did and Rosemary has always enjoyed teaching them. Left to right: Sasikumar, now a Minister in Batticoloa; Vinoth, now a Minister in another Batticoloa circuit; Anurudha, now a curate in a Parish near Kandy; Devadasan, about to be inducted in a Circuit in Jaffna; Sanath, Chaplain to Bishop of Kurunagala, Prabhar, at the Cathedral of the Living Saviour, Colombo, prior to ordination as deacon, Jayamanne, appointed to Matale Baptist Church; Luxsan, returning to CSI Jaffna Ashram.. Their last exam was April 18th .They have all now left TCL.

Their spouses…
We have both enjoyed teaching the Spouses’ Class. Here the three that are leaving: Kokila (married to Vinoth), Dharshini (married to Prabhar) and Priya (married to Devadasan) are pictured. Behind is Dr Ajantha Perera, a leading environmentalist who taught them this term.

Kamal and Luke came to TCL from a seminary in Jaffna for one year (2008/9) to complete their BD course.
They are now part of a new denomination called the CACM (Church of American Ceylon Mission – there is a long history behind this name) which has broken away from the CSI (Jaffna Diocese) for internal reasons. Kamal will serve in Jaffna and Luke in Batticoloa.

Champika, Shalomi and Shehan
Shehan is a Baptist student who has completed a two year course. We will particularly miss this family as they have lived in our complex for the last two years. Shalomi is a real sweetie (D of B 16/9/07). Champika has been most kind, especially when we needed a Sinhala translator! The family are going to serve near Dambulla.

Matt and Rebecca Baker
Matt and Rebecca and their children Moses (7) and Micah (4) are leaving Sri Lanka on May 30th after over 7 years of wonderful work in tertiary education in Nuwara Eliya. We will really miss them and think of them as they return to Canada with no jobs to go to. They had not planned to leave Sri Lanka this year but government policy has forced their hand. We had a nice weekend with them all in April.
We are currently involved in the Orientation Programme for new students which ends May 19th and also we have been out and about visiting current students on their field work. Life is quieter than in term time but we are not idle. Rosemary has an All Day Faculty Meeting on May 11th so there is preparation before and Minutes after
Newsletter back copies are on our website together with a large number of pictures of our life in Sri Lanka: see www.rosemaryandjames.methodistchurch.co.uk.
We ask for prayers/thoughts for all the people mentioned in this newsletter and in addition for continuing prayers for all those who are victims of the war: the sick, injured and bereaved, and for those in the internally displaced people’s camps, and for those ministering to them.
