Kandy Churches 2005 (1)

Kandy Methodist Church.  Architecturally this is very similar to any number of Methodist churches in UK.  There seem to be no concessions to the local climate other than the absence of a temperamental heating system.  The pipe organ stands silent while the organist plays the electric one or the piano.  Behind the church is a large hall with a stage. Kandy Methodist Church is situated on one of the main streets of Kandy's downtown area that comprises a grid of streets packed with small shops.  The street is noisy and this is difficult to avoid on Sunday mornings because the windows and doors are usually wide open to try to keep the building cool.
Kandy Baptist Church is on an even busier street.  It has a bookshop.  The large building behind is a part of a new shopping complex that overlooks Kandy Lake. St. Paul's Anglican Church was built in 1846 and has large side doors along the side of the nave to help the air flow in from its shady grounds.  The church is very close to the Temple of the Tooth.  An elephant lives just behind the church.
