A visit to Horton Plains National Park

Horton Plains is even higher than Nuwara Eliya.  It features unique montane forest which is daily enveloped in cloud, the source of Sri Lanka's longest river, the Mahaweli Ganga, and World's End, a 880m sheer cliff.  This photo shows James resting as the cloud advances up the valley below, something that occurs everyday at about 10am. Within 15 minutes the cloud filled the valley below and soon began to chase us back across the plain.  Our friend Andrew/Walley, a geography teacher, was thrilled to see such a perfect textbook example of Anabatic winds.
A gnarled rhododendron against the cloudy sky. We walked past Baker's Falls.  At one time elephants must have drank here, for Horton Plains was once the home of hundreds of elephants.  Sadly they were all shot by British hunters in the 19th century.
