The TCL -Goudhurst Link

2006 is the twentieth anniversary of the official link between the Parish of St. Mary's Goudhurst in Kent and TCL.  It now includes other places in Sri Lanka too, and the sister Parish of Christ Church, Kilndown. They also have associate members from other parts of England. This link, initiated by Fr. Bob Campbell-Smith and Fr. Renzie Perera (1st & 2nd from right, above), has been mutually enriching over the years with visits from Goudhurst and from Sri Lanka.  In addition, and very importantly for the college, Goudhurst funds the students' fieldwork in the long vacation.  This fieldwork sees the students to working in often desperate places and invariably makes a profound impression on them.  The above picture was taken at a seminar at TCL.  Seated next to the TCL Principal, Rev'd Dr. Jebanesan, is Mrs. Sue Crookall, Secretary of the Goudhurst Sri Lanka Church Association, and her husband, Mr. Tom Crookall. The visit of the Sue and Tom Crookall and Fr. Bob Campbell-Smith was timed to coincide with the inauguration of a new bell tower and bell.  The existing old and untuneful bell marks the routine of each working day and plays an important part in college life.  The new bell will be heard throughout the campus and beyond, reminding  everyone, including the local people, that TCL is a place of disciplined religious study.

This picture shows the heavy bell being position onto the tower.  This was quite a tricky operation because there was nothing to lift the bell with other than the hole though which the pin would go.  Add this to the rickety bamboo scaffolding held together with rope and you have an interesting case study for those interested in health and safety.

Sue Crookall unveiled the plaque of the Bell and Tower, donated by the Parish of Goudhurst to TCL The bell and bell tower. situated at the entrance to the Teaching Rooms and the Chapel
