Some Visits and Visitors: October to December  2009

The President of the Methodist Conference of Britain, Rev'd David Gamble made an official visit to Sri Lanka.  With him came Rev'd Jenny Impey, Co-Chair of the London District who came for a holiday.  It was good to meet them both in Colombo and later at TCL.  This picture is taken on Sunday 4th October 2009 after a service at  Kollupitiya Methodist Church. We were very pleased to be invited as Guests of Honour to the Beacon Hill Academy's annual Speech Banquet and the Grand Hotel in Nuwara Eliya.  The 64 students at BHA are taught English, computing and life skills - amongst other subjects - which build their expertise and confidence.  Public speaking is part of the course and we heard several very interesting and entertaining speeches.  For nearly all the students this will have been their first visit to a hotel such as the Grand.  Nearly all the students get jobs when they leave and some will get jobs in the tourist industry. We were delighted  to welcome our first visitors from Caversham. Bob and Margaret were good friends of ours from Gosbrook Road Methodist Church where James had his membership.  Bob and Margaret Simpson spent over two weeks on the island and we very much enjoyed their company on weekends in Kandy and Nuwara Eliya.

Here they are pictured visiting TCL on Friday October 23rd 2009

Rosemary's mother, Marjorie, was 90 in November.  We were fortunate to be able to visit England and help celebrate the occasion with the whole family, children, spouses and grandchildren.  Here we see Marjorie and George together with Rosemary, William and Katharine on Saturday 21st November 2009.  Rosemary was able to be with her mother for her actual birthday (Nov.17th), and then there was a weekend away for the family in Suffolk in a large house that the offspring had rented for the occasion.

We also visited Caversham Heights Methodist Church on Sunday November 29th 2009 in its centenary year where Rosemary conducted morning and evening services and James gave a talk in the afternoon.  It was lovely to return to see so many familiar and friendly faces, having left Caversham nearly five and a half years ago.
