Trip to the Victoria Dam

| The Victoria dam was built using UK money in the 1980s. It is a high dam that caused much land to be flooded and many thousands of people to be moved, so it was a controversial project. It is part of the controversial Mahaweli Project that aims to provide hydroelectricity and to irrigate parts of the Dry zone to the north east of the hill country. Taking pictures of the dam is not permitted. | Local people swim and wash their clothes in the river. |
