A Visit to See Some Tsunami Work in the East

One of the few buildings left standing on the lagoon side of the road in Vakarai.  Elsewhere there is mainly rubble and concrete floors.  The trees were unaffected. Temporary housing with plots.  Everyone is housed.  Drinking water is supplied by Oxfam lorries and delivered to brightly painted communal water tanks.
St. Paul's Church, Kandy is building a Community Centre and supplying 10 boats and nets.  It is difficult to decide who gets boats and who does not.  The local Fishermen's Societies have helped make such decisions.  In the picture fishermen empty rainwater from two of the St. Paul's boats before carrying them home.  The prawn season was about to start and the fishermen were anxious to prepare the nets in time.  It can take 3 to 4 weeks to create working nets from the parts supplied. A Hindu procession involving mock bows and arrows rushes by.
