Poya Days are Full Moon days and are Public Holidays here. It is a Buddhist religious festival and many devotees wear white and go to their temple for mediation and to offer alms.

These pictures were taken on Wednesday February 20th 2008 at the Peradenyia Buddhist Temple, near the Peradenyia Gardens.

The Lion is also a sacred symbol to the Sinhalese Buddhist: Singha is the Sinhalese word for lion. NB The red post box!
Devotees sitting in front of a shrine beside the Bo Tree.  A stupa is in the background with the saffron robe draped around it.

Devotees coming to the temple.  Many cars, lorries and buses stop outside and make a donation every time they pass.  This happens everyday, not just Poya days.

Lighting candles and leaving behind offerings of flowers.

Leaving the temple in a white sari.  Note that female Methodist Ministers are also expected to wear white - at least on official occasions.
