A Visit to Polonnaruwa, one of the ancient capitals of Sri Lanka

For three hundred years Polonnaruwa was the capital of the South Indian Chola dynasty and then of the Singhalese when they drove the Cholas off the island.   The city was abandoned in the 14th century.  This picture shows the throne room with a magnificent lion, the symbol of the Singhalese kingdom that appears on modern-day Sri Lanka's flag. No lions left in Sri Lanka today. The picture on the right shows Rosemary with her hand in the mouth of the same lion.  Polonnaruwa is only 3-4 hours by road from Kandy and, together with Kandy and Anuradhapura - also ancient capitals - it forms one of the corners of Sri Lanka's Cultural Triangle, a tourist friendly area in the middle of the island.  We travelled just after Christmas with our friends, Andrew/Walley and Kate Kohn, Baptist mission partners in Nepal.  Polonanruwa is quite flat and we toured it on hired bicycles.  While parked under a tree, Kate's saddle was wrecked by a group of hungry monkeys.
This peaceful statue of the Buddha is carved into a rock face and, like the whole of the ancient city, is beautifully preserved and cared for. Part of the multi-storied palace of King Parakramabahu
