Kandy Esala Perahera 2006

The pictures here don't do justice to the sheer spectacle of the Kandy Esala Perahera, the largest of the island's many elephant processions.  Every evening for a week, there are processions of musicians, dancers and elephants through the streets of Kandy.  On the last night we counted 54 elephants going by.  The elephant in this picture is carrying the famous Buddha's tooth relic. Under the red box is the car battery that powers the lights that illuminate the elephant's headdress.

The Perahera is a combined Buddhist and Hindu occasion.  In addition to the parading Buddha's tooth, each of the four main Hindu temples in Kandy decorates elephants in their particular colours.  Please see Sri Lankan guide books for more!

We watched the Perahera four times - from different places! This was taken from outside "our" Church in Yattiunwara Street, Kandy
