Some People: July to September  2009

We were very happy indeed when Jennie, Lottie and Robert visited the us  for ten days in August. They arrived on the first day of our mid-semester break (Sat. August 8th).  Jennie came to Sri Lanka in December 2006 and had been able to persuade her children that it was a very good place to see and experience.  We were delighted to see them and to  share something of life in Sri Lanka with two young people and to find out how they felt about it. Here we are pictured outside of our house Friday August 14th 2009

The Methodist Conference took place in August (19th-24th) in Colombo.  This year the Rev. Donald Ker, the President and Secretary of the Irish Methodist Conference represented the British and Irish Conferences.  Here we see him, outside Kollupytia Methodist Church,   with his wife, Sandra, and the President of the Methodist Church of Sri Lanka, the Rev. Ebenezer Joseph. Donald had preached at the Conference service on  Sunday August 23rd 2009 at  Rev. Ebe has nearly completed his five year Executive Presidency so this was his last conference.   The TCL Principal, Rev. Dr. Jebanesan (Jebi) was appointed to the five year executive post of President beginning in August 2010.  We wish him well.

Twenty First birthdays are a big event in Sri Lanka too.  Here we see Berith and Emeth, the children of our dear next door neighbours here, the Rev. Karunasekara and his wife Jancy, as they celebrate Berith's big day.  Part of the tradition - also at weddings - is to feed cake directly into the mouths of loved ones.  Here Emeth is tidying up after Berith's insertion of a piece of thoroughly iced cake. Rosemary had led the worship service in the home which had begun the celebrations.

The Lawrences were Mission Partners from the CSI (India) sponsored by the Methodist Church of  Britain.  As such they have now left TCL to go to Britain (based in Birmingham)  for a two month (Sept 14th - Nov 13th 2009)  furlough/rest and to give various talks and services  Sorting out the visas took a while and was rather worrying for everyone, but in the end the whole family were granted the visas they needed.  This picture of Felicita, Felix, Malar and Lawrence  was taken in our house after a meal on their penultimate night at TCL, Saturday September 12th 2009.  We hope that rest and fun forms the largest part of their time in Britain.
