Some People in April - May - June 2009

We were very pleased to see Canon David Whittington and Paul Bell who come to Sri Lanka every year to restore church organs.  Here we see them at Kandy Methodist Church where they have  completed the restoration of the organ there.  David gave a splendid concert which was much appreciated by everyone who attended.  Tuesday April 7th 2009. These students were on long vacation fieldwork in the tea estates near Pussellawa.  We visited them at the local vicarage where our friend, Shelton, is the vicar.  The fieldwork involved much travel through the estates which ate lots of time, money and flip-flops

Sunday April  26th 2009. From left to right : Yeherome, Ganga, Kiru, Jegathas, Brian.

We said farewell to Matt and Rebecca Baker who returned to Canada after seven years service to their creation, the Beacon Hill Academy.  They are pictured here at their farewell event in the local Church Hall, an emotional occasion full of lumps in throats and barely concealed tears. Saturday May 2nd 2009.

We will also miss the two Baker boys, Moses and Micah, pictured here before going off to school.  We don't doubt that they will settle well in their new surroundings in Vancouver.  Monday April 27th 2009

This little creature is a baby bat, probably a fruit bat, that must have fallen from its tree nearby.  Two local boys, Yugan and Athulla, found it and tried to help it.  Results unknown. Mahindini works in the TCL library and she recently married Kumara, a sailor in the Navy based in Trincomalee.  This picture is taken at a party given for college staff in Mahindini's father's house which is just off the campus. A few weeks earlier we had visited the same house and James had a very narrow escape from a falling coconut that crashed to the ground between his feet.

We were pleased to welcome Rev'd Nick Thompson and his daughter Laura to Sri Lanka.  They were stopping here on the way home from Australia where Nick had spent a  month of his sabbatical.  We enjoyed showing them a little of the country.  Rosemary is wearing her choir outfit because the picture is taken just outside the Russian Cultural Centre where her choir ( the  Peradenyia Singers),  amongst others, had been singing a few numbers to help mark the fiftieth anniversary of the Cuban Revolution.   Saturday June 13th 2009

Shortly afterwards we stayed with CMS Mission Partners, the Rev. Becky Mathew and her husband Shemil at the top school in the country, St. Thomas's, Mount Lavinia.  Last year Becky was appointed the chaplain to the school. Shemil teaches English.  It was good to see them again.

We stayed with Becky and Shemil Friday night June 19th 2009 in between the Central District  Synod Sessions (June 19th/20th)

Our predecessors in Sri Lanka, the Rev'd David Palmer and Sue Palmer visited Sri Lanka in the hope of getting to Jaffna to celebrate Methodist Day (28th June) with their many friends there.  However, even though the war is over, it is very difficult to visit Jaffna so they had to settle for a time in Colombo and Kandy.  Our picture shows them with Rev. Karunasekara and Jency, our neighbours and friends, outside our house.  Karu and David worked together in Jaffna for several years.  Thursday evening July 2nd 2009.

Recently the Principal of TCL, Rev. Dr. A.W. Jebanesan, known as Jebi, celebrated 25 years since his first induction on leaving TCL was held at Kollupytia Methodist Church, Colombo on June 23rd 1984.  Here we see him in a relaxed mood with his wife, Priya. They hosted  a gathering for Faculty and their families at their home on Tuesday June 23rd 2009.
