A Visit to Kurunegula

The Diocese of Kurunegula is the smaller of the two Anglican dioceses in Sri Lanka.  Its cathedral is nestled beneath a mountain from which an enormous Buddha peers over.  The Buddha enjoys a splendid view to the west.  This picture shows the rear view and the rails used to transport concrete from the nearest road. We went to Kurunegula to see Helen Ledger, an EEP (Experience Exchange Partner) from UK, who was spending 3 months organising and adding to the diocesan archives, and training someone to look after them.  She had already spent 6 months in India helping in a community and living in a Roman Catholic Girls' Home deep in rural Tamil Nadu.
The lake is particularly pretty and we enjoyed a gentle stroll around it. Afterwards we visited the Christodaya boy's home which is run by a retired teacher and his wife.  The boys are aged between 6 and 18 and are very self-reliant.  Not only did they re-cover the roof themselves, but they also had just finished building a tree house in a large mango tree.  Shortly after this photo was taken there was a loud crack.  The mass evacuation included Rosemary and Helen.  Every house has to settle, after all.
