A Visit to the Knuckles Mountains: Poya Day Friday September 4th 2009

| We visited the Knuckles Mountains, a few miles to the north of Kandy, with our friend Jenny who works with VSO (Voluntary Service Overseas) as a Mental Health Social Worker in a Government institution. We have got into the pleasant habit of seeing Jenny every Thursday evening when she and Rosemary go to choir practice together. This picture is taken in the clouds on one of the highest motorable points in the Knuckles, a mountain pass where the wind was stronger than we have ever experienced it in Sri Lanka. | We moved on to one of the two "Mini World's End's in the Knuckles. Here it was also very windy too so we kept a safe distance from the edge. It is so unusual to wear anything on top of a shirt, except in Nuwara Eliya. (World's End itself is in Horton Plains National Park on the other side of Nuwara Eliya). |

Our visit was inspired by our acquisition from the District Surveyor's office of a detailed Ordnance Survey style map (scale 1:50,000) of one corner of the Knuckles. There are not many footpaths marked so we drove to the nearest one in the north of the Knuckles at a place called Pallegama. The road we were following became too bad for the van so we walked to the beginning of the footpath and then started an ascent. Here we see James examining the map while Jenny enjoys the view. We didn't get far because of lack of time and a desire to get back to the main road before dark. It was really quite a remote spot but the locals were very friendly and helpful. They said the road was bad because they didn't have a M.P. We left the map behind with them. We were a considerable novelty. |
Higher up, as we drove home, we could have been on a wild mountainside anywhere. The relatively foul weather was most refreshing for us and we didn't resent it at all. A rainbow was visible to the eye but not to the camera. |
