| While down south at the beginning of the year we decided to pass through the famous town of Kataragama which is a holy place for Buddhists, Hindus and Muslims. We stopped on the way beside the beautiful tank at Tissa and ate some delicious fresh fried fish bought from this woman. |
This is the gate to the Buddhist sanctuary. It was too hot for us to
go in and besides, we didn't have any socks to protect our feeble western
feet from the heat of the sand at the middle of the day. There are Hindu temples there too and a Mosque. |

| Large sums of money are spent on offerings by the Hindus and Buddhists. Here a stall is selling lots of bowls of fruit. |
And here a boy is taking an fairly large offering to one of the shrines. |

|
| Running through the middle of Kataragama is the Menik river. We saw an elephant with brass tipped tusks bathing there. A little upstream a man was cleaning his teeth using river water. |
Here two young elephants are led through the Sacred Area. |
