A Few Scenes Around Kandy - December 2009

| Together with our friend Jenny, we went for a walk up Hantana Hill above Kandy along a path that was nearly overgrown . On top of the hill are a number of large radio masts. We had to dodge various parts of a prefabricated transmitter building that were being carried up the hill by some young soldiers. It was disappointing that we were unable to walk along the ridge as we have done in the past because of "security". Saturday 5th December 2009. The picture of the kite flying (in the newsletter) was taken later on the same walk, a different path on the same hillside. | The soldiers at rest. The government is still recruiting lots of soldiers even though the war is over. This may be because they are needed in the North and East to keep the peace or it may be a way to keep the unemployed employed ahead of an election. We know of one relatively old recruit who lost his job as a furniture maker and who is now on duty at an IDP (Internally Displaced Person) camp in Vavuniya. |

A scene from the Nine Lessons and Carols service at Trinity College Chapel in Kandy. This photo shows the choristers in front of the altar with Sri Lankan artist David Paynter's picture of the crucifixion, one of three murals that help make the Chapel the most beautiful church building we have come across in Sri Lanka. |
A pretty sunset above the busy Peradeniya Road in Kandy. We see some
beautiful sunsets here in Sri Lanka.
