Around Kandy - May and  June 2007

This large Buddha has been under construction for a while in a position to welcome visitors arriving on the Colombo road.  It looks more picturesque to our western eyes while draped in orange cloth. The main annual Buddhist Festival is Wesak which fell on May 1st this year.  Wesak commemorates the birth, death and enlightenment of Buddha.  Together with some of the campus children we went into Kandy to see the many lanterns and lights.  This picture shows a large illuminated structure with a statue of Buddha at its centre which appeared to radiate outwards.
A very large Wesak lantern in the car park of the Kandy Municipal  Council offices. A view over Kandy and the lake from high up in the Temple of the Tooth.  With the Reverend  Johnston McMaster, we explored the museum over three floors which, amongst other things, included interesting letters related to the early British encounters with Buddhism.

A view of part of the stunning Peradeniya Gardens - the best place we have found for an afternoon stroll in Sri Lanka.  Handy that it's only 15 minutes away from TCL!
