Some visits in and  around Kandy July and August 2008

It is always good to meet new people and we were delighted to come across Rev'd Clare MacClaren, Lyndon Shepherd and their twin daughters Anna and Katie.  Here they are pictured with us outside Trinity College Chapel on Saturday July 26th 2008  Poya Day Thursday July 17th 2008: we visit Wattegama with Clare, Lyndon Anna and Katie
On Saturday July 26th we went walking with Clare, Lyndon, Anna and Katie in Udawattakele Forest Reserve. A Buddhist monk lives as a hermit here and meditates on issues of mortality. Here is his cave and one of his skulls. View of the mountains near Hunas Falls on the Poya Day, Thursday July 17th 2008

Saturday August 16th and Sunday August 17th 2008 coincided with the climax of the Perahera.  The Leaders of Kandy Methodist Church hadput up a poster which turned out to be rather controversial amongst some in Kandy's Christian community.  An English translation of the Sinhala reads:

"We note our respect and appreciation to the Hon.  Diyawardime Niyereme ( Chief Administrator of the Temple of the Tooth ) for showing the world our culture and religious co-existence during the Dalada Festival."

Sunday August 17th 2008 Kandy

Rosemary watched the Daytime Perahera from the comforts of Kandy Muslim Hotel where she received kind hospitality and had superb views. The daytime Perahera has a short route from the Hindu Temple to the Temple of the Tooth and involves dancers and drummers, and a shorter procession of decorated elephants.  Coconuts are cracked in the path of the processing elephants by well-wishers.
