January saw a Presidential election and its rash of posters, "cut-outs" (massive pictures of the candidates) and banners. Kandy Methodist Church had its own to encourage a peaceful election - which transpired almost everywhere. |
The election was won by the incumbent, Mahinda Rajapaksa,by a substantial margin. See March 2010 Newsletter for more. |

| We've had two excuses recently to visit one of our favourite local places, the Roman Catholic National Seminary at Ampitya, 2km beyond Kandy Lake. It's beautiful buildings and well cared for grounds are a delight to stroll around. | On January 24th we attended the annual Unity Day where this year TCL joined the students and staff at the National Seminary for day's programme. This year the theme was "Witnesses to Christ" . Here we see Rosemary together with the Rector of the National Seminary, Fr. Jayakody and Fr. Stephen and Rev. Dr. Sahabandhu of TCL. |

Having helped with the direction of an extract from the Merchant of Venice last year, James was invited to help with an extract from Julius Caesar this year. The scene over Caesar's body where Brutus and Anthony try to win over the mob had been chosen. |
James was only needed for two of the early rehearsals and was delighted at the performance to see how far things had developed. The mob really was rather nasty and the subdued music that was improvised on an electric organ added hugely to the atmosphere of barely subdued violence. The performance took place on Sunday March 7th. |
