A break at Giritale and Minneriya 14-18 September 2008

|
| In the short break between the first and second terms of the 08/09 academic year we spent four nights in Giritale. We rested most of the time but did ride in a jeep into Minneriya National Park to see the wild life, in particular, the elephants and birds. |

| Minneriya National Park is based around Minneriya Tank (lake). The end of the dry season is the best time to see elephants. The lake is much reduced in size. Grass grows where the lake has receded so the elephants have a long walk from the shady forest to the lake for a drink and a bath. The dry ground is easy for jeeps to drive across. This picture shows one of three groups we saw. This group included a one month old calf seen in the middle of the picture. |

| The views from the hotel across nearby Giritale lake were lovely. Rosemary rested her ankle. We read and we swam in the hotel pool. We enjoyed the views and the peace and James wrote our September newsletter. |
