A Visit to the Methodist Evangelism Training Centre at Kal Eliya -  Friday June 12th 2009

The Methodist Church in Sri Lanka has two Evangelism Training Colleges, one in Kal Eliya on the Kandy / Colombo road,  teaching in Sinhala, and one in Kalkuda on the east coast,  teaching in Tamil.  We thought it was high time we visited one of them. At Kal Eliya the Principal, Rev. Nadeera Fernando, has rapidly developed the three acres of land using the labour of the students and his own enthusiasm.  His ambitious aim is to make the college self-sufficient so that its produce pays for the college's activities.  Here is a beautiful sheep in its special raised shelter which stops foot rot. Sheep are rare in Sri Lanka. Goats are more plentiful.  Mutton on the menu means either.

Most lucrative of all is the rearing of pigs which is unusual in Sri Lanka.  A piglet can fetch Rs5000 rupees, almost a month's salary for some people.

Here is Rev. Nadeera, with his wife Inocha and their young daughter, on the verandah of his bungalow that overlooks the beautifully kept farm and grounds.  Everything has a function.
