Visit to the ancient Buddhist sacred city of Anuradhapura

We drove from Negombo to Anuradhapura via Puttalam. There was much to see on the road including this Buddha sheltering beneath the hood of a cobra. The cobra is sacred in Buddhism because it provided shade to the Buddha. This temple was on the way in to Anuradhapura. |
The ancient city of Anuradhapura comprises mainly monastic remains because these were made to last unlike the houses of ordinary people. We hired cycles to explore. Here is the huge Jetavana Dagoba. A dagoba is a stupa which contains ancient relics. |

| Cycling is definitely the best way of getting around. The ruins were deserted. There were very few tourists. | A lovely view across a tank to another huge, restored dagoba |

| A moonstone at Abhayagiri from the 8th century CE. | A Nestorian cross found in Anuradhapura, now in the National Museum there, believed to be from the 6th century CE. This is the earliest known evidence of Christianity in Sri Lanka. |
