| On our way to Anuradhapura we stopped at Aukana, the rather remote home to the largest standing ancient Buddha in Sri Lanka. You can just see Rosemary providing a sense of scale. The temple complex was very beautiful and peaceful. But it was hot! Thursday March 26th 2009 | On to the ancient capital itself. This is Jetavanarama dagoba. It's restoration to an adequate state of repair is due to be completed soon. Friday March 27th 2009 |

This is the Ruvanvelisaya dagoba. It is 55m high and is being restored. On the left are several painters on a ladder. On the right is another bamboo and rope ladder than takes the brave all the way to the top. Around the base you can see some of the 360 stone elephants that guard the dagoba. |
We went to Mihintale, the place where Buddhism first took hold in Sri Lanka. The temple complex here is also huge. Here we see our two companions for the trip, Clive Mills an Experience Exchange Programme volunteer who has been working at TCL, and Jenny Hulin, a mental heath nurse working as a volunteer for Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO). | We spent a quiet time admiring the views across the tank and watching the bird life. | |
